When asked to define the term “cabaret”, Arnold Weinstein, playwright and lyricist, said it best. Cabaret is: “Ideas decked out in mascara and lipstick”. For Girlkulture founders Ariela Morgenstern, Lara Bruckmann and Darla Wigginton, nothing seemed more exciting than donning a pair of fishnets and singing for an intelligent, theatre-loving audience. Though classically trained, all three felt a hunger to perform in the intimate cabaret setting.
In 2004, when these three opera-singers-gone-underground found each other and their shared interest in vintage cabaret, they embarked on the group now called Girlkulture. The term "girlkultur" was used in Weimar-era Berlin to evoke the socially irreverant, "new woman" of the pre-war time period. She was independent, intelligent and daring.
This year, Girlkulture bids Ariela "au revoir" as she heads to New York and the next step in her career and add the talented soprano Anja Strauss to the Girlkulture mix.
