We used to wonder. . . "where can we find an intelligent, savvy audience interested in hearing compelling songs sung with theatrical verve, wit and sass...all while decked out in fishnets?"

Girlkulture's revue treats audiences with bawdy songs of Berlin’s cabaret-era and then moves to America’s early Broadway years. Featured composers include noted Weimar composers Weill, Spoliansky, and Hollaender, among others.  The sassy Andrews Sisters trios of the 40's, the witty ditties of Porter and the cabaret-style songs of Bolcom as well as Girlkulture’s own rousing rendition of Kander & Ebb's "Cell Block Tango" Chicago all make for an evening of great entertainment.

The members of Girlkulture (Darla Wigginton, Lara Bruckmann, and Anja Strauss), having sung in theaters across the country and abroad, bring high-level musical craft to this compelling repertoire.

The songlist includes :

  • Mischa Spoliansky (1930's-era Berlin composer) - including the wonderfully funny “Special Girlfriend” and the sexy “Take if Off Petronella”.
  • Friedrich Hollaender - whose music was made famous by the 1931 movie “The Blue Angel” with Marlene Dietrich and many Hollywood films.
  • Kurt Weill songs - both from his years in Germany and drawn from his Broadway hits after he fled Germany and came to America.
  • Cole Porter’s sassy “Most Gentlemen Don’t Like Love” and Irving Berlin's sumptuous "Suppertime".
  • A radio hour vignette of Andrew Sisters trios like “Bei Mir bist du Schoen”, "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy", and "Well Alright".
  • Kander & Ebb’s "Cell Block Tango" from the musical Chicago and "Gotta Get a Gimmick" from Jule Styne's Gypsy - each flavored with Girlkulture’s own take.
  • William Bolcom’s "Black Max" and "Toothbrush Time" with witty lyrics by Arnold Weinstein.
